Electrical work is not the same everywhere. Four things about this part of Louisiana change what we look at and what we recommend.
Storms are a wiring problem, not just a power problem
When the power comes back after an outage, it does not come back gently. That surge is what takes out air conditioners, appliance boards and anything with electronics in it. Storm season is also when we see damaged service masts and weather heads, which is work that has to happen before the utility will reconnect you.
The heat is what exposes an undersized panel
Air conditioning here runs hard for months at a stretch. That is the load that reveals a panel that was fine when the house was built and is not fine now. Lights that dim when the compressor kicks on are usually telling you something about the panel, not about the light.
Water and electricity need more than drying out
If a panel, an outlet or a fixture has been underwater, letting it dry is not the same as making it safe. Corrosion works slowly and shows up as a problem months later. Anything that got wet needs to be looked at, and some of it needs to be replaced.

Additions, converted porches, detached workshops and outbuildings are common, and the wiring in them was often done at a different time, by different hands, to a different code. That is not a reason to panic. It is a reason to know what you actually have before you add to it.
